SUMMARY:Public Forum on Second Crossing
DESCRIPTION:Due to the complexity of the issue\, and the importance of the Mendenhall Wetlands to the citizens of Juneau\, the Territorial Sportsmen and the Mendenhall Wetlands Study Group and other cooperating organizations are sponsoring a Public Forum to more openly discuss the present study concerning the 2nd Crossing of Gastineau Channel to Douglas Island. \nSeveral long term fiscal obligations and commitments are being considered for the Borough with permanent environmental impacts being purposely minimized. Juneau Residents need to be fully informed of these long term obligations and impacts before the final decisions are made. \nParticipation in the Forum is expected from: the City and Borough of Juneau (who have requested the new crossing study)\, DOWL (who is leading this study of possible crossing routes)\, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game\, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service\, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration\, Southeast Alaska Land Trust\, N. Douglas Neighborhood Association and several cooperating organizations. \nThe Forum will be also available on-line via zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/81824791850?pwd=K72xbMvS7uOix8kg7hGvzbYxxY6CXE.1 \nJAS point of contact: Brenda Wright

DESCRIPTION:The group will meet at the western end of Sunny Drive (looking toward the airport\, not toward downtown). Sunny Drive is accessed from the old Glacier Highway\, not from Egan Drive. This wetlands bird walk highlights the Tree Swallow Nesting Box project\, and the conservation efforts of SEALTrust on this rebounding tidal flat. Other various birds such as Greater Yellowlegs\, Starlings\, Yellowthroats and Lincoln’s Sparrows may be seen here. Rubber boots are recommended. SUMMARY:Bird Walk #9
DESCRIPTION:The walk will begin at the parking lot by the Forest Service building on Back Loop Rd. This is an out-and-back hike on a graveled\, relatively flat trail with a few small ups and downs. Distance is roughly one and a half miles depending on the various side trails explored. The deciduous vegetation (alder\, willow\, and cottonwood) offers songbirds and ideal habitat for nesting and foraging. Warblers such as American redstarts\, Wilson’s\, yellow\, Townsend’s\, and water thrush sing and dart through the leaves. Vireos\, flycatchers\, and three-toed woodpeckers are also in the area. \nLocation: Dredge Lakes Area: Forest Ranger District Office on Mendenhall Loop Road\nhttps://www.google.com/maps/place/US+Forest+Service+Ranger+Station/@58.399258\,-134.7148822\,12z/data=!4m10!1m2!2m1!1sUS+Forest+Service+Building+Back+Loop+Road+\,+junea!3m6!1s0x5400e220ad4c4b15:0x501a8a7a0a96ab32!8m2!3d58.399258!4d-134.5706866!15sCjJVUyBGb3Jlc3QgU2VydmljZSBCdWlsZGluZyBCYWNrIExvb3AgUm9hZCAsIGp1bmVhdSIDiAEBkgEPbmF0aW9uYWxfZm9yZXN04AEA!16s%2Fg%2F1tptq925?entry=ttu \nJAS contact: field-trips@juneau-audubon-society.org \nLeaders: Deb Rudis and Kari Monagle

SUMMARY:Bird Walk #8
DESCRIPTION:Hike will proceed along the mostly level\, mostly flat\, with some gravel or dirt path with numerous muddy spots and occasional water crossings\, out to the wetlands at the mouth of the Mendenhall River. Tall grasses hide nesting Savannah Sparrows and other songbirds. The area also attracts snipes\, shrikes\, waterfowl\, as well as raptors in the meadows. One of the premiere birding hotspots in Juneau\, it also attracts lots of dog walkers. Please leave your dog at home. SUMMARY:Bird Walk #7
DESCRIPTION:This popular birding site sees an ongoing influx of migrating birds\, with new species arriving weekly. Group will gather at the end of Radcliffe Road at the Dike Trail parking lot at 8:00 a.m. Hike will proceed along the level flat graveled path to the single-track trail\, turning around at the airport fence at the end of the runway. One side of the trail offers a transitional zone of conifers\, alder\, cottonwoods\, and willows paralleling the runway while the other side is a bird haven of tall grasses\, sedges\, and other wetland vegetation. The distance from the parking lot to the end is roughly 1.6 miles. This is an out and back hike\, and participants may choose to turn around at any time. If you enjoy photography\, you might choose to bring your camera along with your binoculars. (Low tide -2.1’ at 9:04 am) \nLocation: Mendenhall Wetlands State Game Refuge – Airport Dike Trail – https://www.google.com/maps/place/Airport+Dike+Trailhead/@51.8240982\,-139.8219101\,5z/data=!4m10!1m2!2m1!1sAirport+Dike+trail!3m6!1s0x5493636abcdb14c1:0xd2c4a60c42f82135!8m2!3d46.1530454!4d-123.8642852!15sChJBaXJwb3J0IERpa2UgdHJhaWySAQtoaWtpbmdfYXJlYeABAA!16s%2Fg%2F11kpr5hs0h?entry=ttu \nJAS Contact: field-trips@juneau-audubon-society.org \nLeaders: Patty Rose and Jeff Sauer

DESCRIPTION:This will be a muddy\, 3-4 hour birding adventure through the grasses to shoreline. Leaving the Dike Trail\, the group will head off onto the dirt path out through the meadow to the low tide line. SUMMARY:Bird Walk #4
DESCRIPTION:Group will gather in the parking lot in the picnic area (not in the Eagle River Campground). On one side of the area there is willow and alder\, and fields of grasses and wildflowers. In the opposite direction\, Eagle River flows out to join Lynn Canal creating an extensive delta and tidal flat. At low tide a multitude of sand bars are exposed but beware as the tide comes in quickly and quietly. Xtratufs or other waterproof boots are recommended. This is a relatively flat out-and back-walk\, mostly on sand. If you have a scope\, it is recommended as shorebirds are flighty and occasionally difficult to see. SUMMARY:Monthly Program: "Much (More) Ado About Marmots" with Link Olson
DESCRIPTION:Evening lecture/program presentation with Link Olson “Much (more) ado about marmots”. \n6:30 p.m. at the University of Alaska Southeast\, Egan Lecture Hall. \nThe JAS April program will feature Link Olson discussing Alaska’s amazing marmots. \nMeanwhile\, keep an eye out! Researchers from the University of Alaska Museum and multiple collaborating institutions are tracking hibernation timing in Hoary Marmots at sea level (“beach marmots”) and need help documenting earliest emergence dates. If you see a beach marmot anywhere in Alaska or northern British Columbia any time in March or the first two weeks of April\, please email akmarmoteers@gmail.com with coordinates or a locality description. Photos are helpful – uploading those photo(s) to iNaturalist is even better. The earliest photo-documented sighting in or around Juneau is April 1st\, and anyone who breaks that record will be recognized as “Marmoteer of the Year!”
