Our mission is to conserve the natural ecosystems of Southeast Alaska, focusing on birds, and other wildlife and their habitats, for the benefit and enjoyment of current and future generations.
Our work involves teaching and learning, conserving and restoring habitats, protecting avian and other wildlife species, and offering volunteer opportunities while engaging the people of Southeast Alaska’s communities.
Our values include diversity and equity in all engagements and aspects of the organization, ethical science-based land stewardship practices, and a commitment to the importance of birds in our world, for today and all the tomorrows.
Our affiliation with the National Audubon Society dates back to 1977 when a local chapter was established in Juneau. There are nearly 500 local chapters within the United States which use science, education and grassroot advocacy to advance the National Audubon Society’s conservation mission. Audubon Alaska is the state-based organization that promotes conservation efforts throughout Alaska.
We differ from the national and state Audubon entities in that we seek to keep our focus on Southeast Alaska, and do not take a partisan stance or weigh in on legislative actions. We do work collaboratively with the state office on Southeast Alaska issues and endeavors.
The Juneau Audubon Society functions with an all volunteer board of 12 individuals. There is no paid staff. The board consists of four executive officers and six to eight board members. There are six established committee chairs outlined in our bylaws: Communication, Conservation, Education, Field Trips, Membership, and Programs.
Elections for the four executive officers occur each October. Positions for executive officers are voted on each year. Other members of the board are voted onto the board and, when appropriate, appointed a committee position. We request committee chairs to support the organization for a three-year term.
A commitment to the board includes participating in at least six of eight board meetings per year (September through April), fulfilling board and committee chair responsibilities, and supporting the organization’s efforts and mission as a whole.
All board members are to engage in the organization’s development and leadership, and offer expertise, advice and time while being reliable and respectful.
